An Arizona Poem

By

ARIZONA FLAGOn February 14, 1912 Arizona became a state

It joined the USA union at number forty-eight

It’s bordered by California, Utah, & New Mexico

Phoenix is its largest city and its capital

Its flower the saguaro cactus, its bird the cactus wren

Arizona means “little spring” by the O’odham Indian

Its tree is the palo verde, the turquoise its gemstone

It’s the place where cattle are raised and cotton is grown

Along with dairy products, this state has much to offer

For Arizona is the nation’s largest source of copper

Mining and manufacturing are done here, so we’re told

To produce molybdenum, also silver and gold

If you should go down there, you’ll want a companion

To share the experience of seeing the Grand Canyon

There’s the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert too

And the reconstructed London Bridge at Lake Havasu

It’s known for large rivers and great-sized lakes indeed

Such as Lakes Mohave, Havasu, Powell, and Mead

As for famous singers and actors, this state has a great mix

As Alice Cooper, Linda Ronstadt, Glenn Campbell, Stevie Nicks

It is a place of writers whom we must pay respect

As Zane Grey, Bill Keane, and Erma Bombeck

The Arizona Diamondbacks play major league baseball

The Cardinals are an NFL team, as they play football

Their winters are quite mild, their summers hot for sure

It’s very hard to live there with no air conditioner

Summer days can get as hot as 120º Fahrenheit

The climate is quite arid, but sometimes cold at nights

Arizona has great landscape, mountain and desert scenes

Its restaurants have large patios and healthy cuisines

And if you can, do attend a Native-American festival

And if you love Mexican food, there are great places to go

There are lots of cultural events, museums, and art

And Indian reservations, tribal lands, and national parks

So if you love diversity and the great outdoors

Arizona is one state you should visit for sure
